Preliminary works are underway for two of the master plan projects – the work to reinstate some original design features in Northumberland Square and improvements to Howard Street.
One of the holes already dug on Howard Street has revealed signs of the old cobble road below the asphalt road surface along with one of the old metal tram tracks.
The Chamber will keep members updated about the forthcoming works via our regular Business Bulletin.
North Tyneside Council have provided the following notice about the digging of a number of trial holes in the area that includes Northumberland Square, Howard Street and Saville Street.
North Tyneside Council has ambitious plans to transform North Shields. These will transform the town centre and riverside areas through a series of bold regeneration projects.
A key aim is to improve the area so that it provides the right environment to support businesses, retail and leisure users.
This includes work in Northumberland Square to reinstate some original design features, as well as improvements along Howard Street such as high-quality upgrades to the look and feel of the area. This will be subject to public engagement on the design proposals.
At this stage preliminary work is planned to take place for these projects between 27 April and 14 May, weather permitting.
This work will be to excavate holes in Northumberland Square, Howard Street and Saville Street.
This will allow us to assess ground conditions and the precise location of underground cables and utilities.
Barriers will be installed around all works and localised pedestrian diversions will be in place where necessary. We expect that access to properties will be maintained at all times.
For the duration of the excavation works, one of the parking bays on the western side of Howard Street (north of the junction with Saville Street) will be unavailable as it will be used to accommodate welfare facilities and materials storage.
And for one day, a parking bay will be unavailable on the northern side of Northumberland Square, opposite the bus stop.
Off-peak (9.30am to 3.30pm) four-way traffic lights are expected to be in place from 10-14 May at the junction of Howard Street and Saville Street while the excavation work is carried out.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by our works and thank you in advance for your patience.
For your own safety, please keep your distance from the construction operation and staff.
Our workforce will follow Public Health England advice and Covid-19 working procedures specially developed for the construction industry to ensure they operate safely and effectively.
